Originally conceived for economic purposes \u2013 the economy of time, economy of space, economy of energies\u2014, with time, the ampersand acquired some elegance and became gifted. For example, an <em><strong>&amp;<\/strong><\/em> can promote mere associations to a brand status just by showing up. \u201cDolce and Gabbana\u201d, \u201cThe Velvet Underground and Nico\u201d\u2026 <em>sound<\/em> the same, but <em>look<\/em> downgraded if not used.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-33922\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalizationpartners.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/the-ampersand-0.jpg\" alt=\"the-ampersand-history-gpi-translate-blog\" width=\"604\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.globalizationpartners.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/the-ampersand-0.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.globalizationpartners.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/the-ampersand-0-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For some reason, this curvy and august character tempts us to exploit its possibilities each time a sentence meets an <em>and<\/em>, but at the same time, its usage seems limited to rare and privileged occasions\u2014which perhaps, makes it more appealing.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is this symbol? What does it mean? Where did it come from and what is its role in modern writing?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What It Is, What It Means<\/h2>\n<p>Better known as the <em>\u201cand\u201d<\/em> sign, the character &amp; (the ampersand) is a logogram<strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/strong> used to substitute the conjunction <em>and<\/em>. Behind its multiple shape variations is the merging of the letters <strong><em>e<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>t<\/em><\/strong>, since <strong><em>&amp;<\/em><\/strong> is, precisely, a ligature<strong><sup>2<\/sup><\/strong> for <em><strong>et<\/strong><\/em>\u2014the Latin word for <em>and<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Although the exact moment of the birth of the ampersand remains unknown, evidence of its usage dates back to the Roman civilization. The oldest known <em>et<\/em> ligature appears as graffiti on a wall from the remains of Pompeii; buried under the ashes of the Mount Vesuvius volcanic eruption in the year 79 AD.<\/p>\n<p>The ampersand managed to reach different languages as the Roman Empire spread.<\/p>\n<p>Centuries later, because of its space-saving quality, scribes first, then typesetters, made extensive use of this ligature in running text\u2014contrary to how it is used in modern writing. In this way, the <em>&amp;<\/em> was used as a replacement for <em>and<\/em> whenever a line got too crowded.<\/p>\n<p>It is also worth mentioning the parallel existence of a Tironian <em>et<\/em> (\u204a), designed around the year 100 BC by Marcus Tullius Tiro (Cicero\u2019s secretary) as part of his shorthand system<em><sup>3<\/sup><\/em>, known as <em>Tironian notes<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8230;derived neither from the original Roman letters E and T, nor from their minuscule forms \u2014e and t\u2014 but from a scribal abbreviation used in the Tironian notation system. [&#8230;] The forms of the Tironian notes had almost nothing to do with the Roman alphabet but consisted of unmodulated strokes that carefully differentiated between oblique, vertical and horizontal<strong><sup>4<\/sup><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Tironian <em>et<\/em> faded after the 1st century but had quite a comeback during the Gothic period. A font family, for example, <em>Adobe Garamond Premier Pro<\/em> has ten different ampersands distributed among its Roman and italic versions, while <em>Poetica<\/em> (by Robert Slimbach) offers a total of 62 variations.<\/p>\n<p>Despite of many writing variations, we usually distinguish two main streams or versions. Firstly, a <em>roman<\/em> glyph, which follows the Carolingian stroke, which we know and use the most. On the other hand, an <em>italic<\/em> variable that emulates later cursive <em>et <\/em>ligatures from the Renaissance resembles more the word itself. Even though styles and variations are frequent, it is by no means a rule in modern typography design.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33913 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalizationpartners.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/the-ampersand-3.jpg\" alt=\"the-ampersand-variations-gpi-blog\" width=\"596\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.globalizationpartners.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/the-ampersand-3.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.globalizationpartners.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/the-ampersand-3-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>About Its Contemporary Naming<\/h2>\n<p>An explanation to its English designation, <em>ampersand<\/em>, can be related to &amp; being taught alongside the twenty-six letters of the English alphabet until the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>As explained in the Merriam-Webster dictionary:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Starting in the late Middle Ages, single letters that also functioned as words\u2014think I and A\u2014were referred to as letters with the aid of the phrase per se, to clarify that it was the letter being referred to, and not the word. [\u2026] When the 27th quasi-letter &amp; was referred to it was called &amp; per se, and, meaning \u201c&amp; by itself (is the word) and.\u201d That read as \u201cand per se and\u201d<strong><sup>5<\/sup><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, English speakers summarized this \u201cand per se, and\u201d expression into \u201campersand\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The French, on the other hand, went straight to the definition. The word for <em>&amp;<\/em> is <em>esperluette<\/em>. This derives from <em>es-per-lou-et<\/em>, which is the Occitan equivalent for the French <em>C\u2019est pour le \u00ab et \u00bb<\/em>: \u201cit is for the and\u201d. Crystal clear.<\/p>\n<p>In Spanish, we simply call it <em>et<\/em>, honoring its Latin roots.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>When and When Not to Use It<\/h2>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalizationpartners.com\/resources\/spanish-translation-services\/\">Spanish writing<\/a>, its use faces a functional dilemma, as the word for <em>and<\/em> is <em>y<\/em>, and it is simpler to draw than the ampersand itself. In which case, choosing to replace the word <em>y<\/em> with the ligature <em>&amp;<\/em> will be a matter of aesthetics (and perhaps snobbery, too) rather than practicality.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the language and despite its former purposes, using &amp; as a replacement for the word <em>and<\/em> in running text is perceived as a grammar mistake and should be avoided, with some exceptions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most common usage of the ampersand:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">In commercial-related matters such as business partnerships and, branding and logo design (Tiffany <strong>&amp;<\/strong> Co., Johnson <strong>&amp;<\/strong> Johnson).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">In certain fields, to denote professional collaborations (\u201cScreenplay by Quentin Tarantino <strong>&amp;<\/strong> Roger Roberts Avery\u201d).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">In abbreviations that include the word and (<em>B&amp;B<\/em> for bed and breakfast, <em>R&amp;B<\/em> for rhythm and blues).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">In academic writing, formal style guides like APA encourage its use in the citation when the source has more than one author.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 40px;\">The Latin expression <em>et cetera<\/em> (meaning <em>and so forth<\/em>)\u2014frequently identified with <em>etc.<\/em>\u2014can also be written <strong>&amp;c<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/strong> In a written language, a <em>logogram<\/em> is a character that represents a word or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/es\/diccionario\/ingles\/morpheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">morpheme<\/a>. All ten digits of the Arabic numeral system are logograms: <em>4<\/em> designates <em>four<\/em>. Moreover, it can be found in Chinese characters, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and even cuneiform scripts, dating back in the Bronze Age. You might be already familiar with logograms such as <em>%<\/em> (meaning <em>percent<\/em>), <em>\u00a3<\/em> (meaning <em>pound<\/em>), or <em>@<\/em> (meaning <em>at<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>2<\/sup><\/strong> A <em>ligature<\/em> is the result of the merging of two or more letters into one. For example, <em>ae<\/em> into <em>\u00e6<\/em>. From modern alphabets, letter <em>w<\/em> is the result of the merging of <em>vivo<\/em> and <em>uu<\/em>, and <em>\u00f1<\/em> was originally created to replace <em>nn<\/em>.
