The cinema industry gets more competitive every day, and taking creative risks or delegating the task to independent designers seems to be neglected in the process. In general, as long as a movie poster presents commercially relevant data, like genre, actors, awards or box office numbers, the goal is achieved. But this wasn&#8217;t always so.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few decades ago, movie posters would rarely cross their local border, due to logistical obstacles, disparity of resources or military conflicts. Polish designers understood the potential of color and framing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Posters and Cinema <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Posters, as we know them, began in France in the mid-nineteenth century. By 1895, during the first public screenings of the Lumi\u00e8re brothers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinematograph\">Cin\u00e9matographe<\/a>, they were already settled as the main channel of advertising in every corner of Paris. Cinema industry was, then, born and immediately found its everlasting ally.<\/p>\n<p>Films started traveling the world, but countries reserved the right to create their own movie posters. Each of them handled the task in different ways, chasing different ambitions and under different circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>During <strong>Hollywood<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Golden Age<\/em> (from the 1920s to 1960s), the success of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star_system_(filmmaking)\">star system<\/a> as a recipe for blockbusters set a canon for movie posters that lasted for decades\u2014this is: highlighting the movie star (and main attraction) with recognizable faces and big names. However, with the American counterculture, old Hollywood stepped aside. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Hollywood\">New Hollywood<\/a> movie posters showed rejection for these earlier standards.<\/p>\n<p>Across the ocean, groundbreaking movie posters from the<strong> Russian<\/strong> <em>avant-garde<\/em> in the 1920s (like those from the Stenberg brothers) were created as an answer to the nation\u2019s new political agenda. But these years of fruitful experimentation came soon to an end, when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socialist_realism\">Socialist realism<\/a> was declared \u201c<em>the official style of Soviet culture\u201d<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20131208100515\/http:\/soviethistory.org\/index.php?page=subject&amp;SubjectID=1934writers&amp;Year=1934\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In contrast with the mentioned situations, adaptations from <strong>Central and<\/strong> <strong>Eastern European <\/strong>and <strong>Cuban<\/strong> designers from the second half of the twentieth century approached true individual artistic freedom. None of them was being directed by profits or official aesthetics. Neil Fujita would have been very different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Poland (middle): Tomasz Rumi\u0144ski\u2019s version replaced the earnest concept from the USA design for bitterness. Colors are used to emphasize certain feelings, like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Expressionism\">expressionists<\/a> from the early twentieth century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Cuba (right): \u201c<em>I strongly believe in humor. It is a palliative to enjoy what is expressed<\/em>\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.posterposter.org\/master-featured\/antonio-perez-niko\/\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> says the author, Antonio P\u00e9rez \u00d1ico.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Virtues and Limitations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Each country created posters according to the technology available at the time of production. Nevertheless, these limitations generally end up defining the artistic profile of a certain group. For example, the so celebrated visual rhetoric of poster designing from post-revolutionary <strong>Cuba<\/strong>\u2014all commissioned by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wihttps:\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Instituto_Cubano_del_Arte_e_Industria_Cinematogr%C3%A1ficos\">ICAIC<\/a>\u2014would not have been the same without the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Screen_printing\">screen printing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The same nation-technique alliance emerged around the 1960s between <strong>Japan<\/strong> and their signature photomontages (inherited from Berlin <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dada\">Dadaists<\/a>) with retouched photos that displayed their dominance overcrowded compositions. Although the concept is the same as the Japanese version (Medea and the fire<em>)<\/em>, the result is completely different.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Reflecting a Movement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Cinematic movements shaped not only filmmaking but also poster designing. For instance, while movie posters for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/German_Expressionism_(cinema)\">German expressionism<\/a>\u00a0are likely to have nightmarish\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/chiaroscuro\">chiaroscuro<\/a>, distorted angles and sharp forms, the gloomy paintings for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Italian_neorealism\">Italian neorealism<\/a> will focus on the characters and their dramas. Even so, what\u2019s most attractive about them manifests only through a comparison exercise.
