Each year, and for many each quarter, marketing departments, training departments, legal and documentation departments need to address their translation budgets.  Planning for translation costs is key in building your budgets to ensure your required communications are paid for and published across languages and locales when needed.

In this 5-part blog series, I am going to help you budget for translation projects whether for an individual project or a month, quarter, or year of content. We will break down your budget across 5 project types:

Estimating Translation Costs for Documents

To estimate your translation spend or your budget, we will use a very easy and handy tool, GPI’s Budget Calculator also known as GPI’s Translation Quick Quote Calculator. GPI’s Translation Quick Quote Calculator (QQC) allows budget builders to provide basic metrics and receive a budgetary quote which includes tasks, timelines, and costs per language selected. There are even handy popups to guide you through the steps to get your translation quotes.

Now if you prefer, you can send GPI any number of translation projects (source documents or just the word count, page count, languages and subject matter). We can then provide an exact quote and budget based on your submissions. Many budget builders appreciate the online budget tool especially if they don’t have any source documents, but have a rough idea of projects, word count, languages, etc.

2. Answer a few important questions needed to estimate a document translation project.

a) Name, email, word count, and start date.
b) If you have actual files, you can upload the document and a word count will be calculated automatically.
c) If you do not have a document, input metrics like word count, images requiring localization and languages to get started.
d) Do you need “formal glossary development”? This is creating a glossary of all important keywords related to the project such as technical terms or brand names, etc.
e) Do you need “desktop publishing” – This is formatting the translated documents to match the source in terms of design, fonts, graphics, etc.

HINT:  It is easy to combine documents within one quote generation form if all your languages are the same. Or you can do a series of individual document quotes, print or email them and combine at the end. We find most people like to cost out individual documents or sets of documents as they may decide to not translate or to translate something based on the cost and can then easily remove or add it from the total budget planned.

What Is Sign Language?

Sign language is a way of communicating via visual gestures and signs, used by deaf or hard of hearing people, however also used by those who are unable or have trouble speaking, whether a condition or a disability. The language is completely developed, with grammar and lexicon whilst using facial expressions, which can change the whole meaning of a sign.

 

History of Sign Language

Sign language’s earliest records have been noted to be established since the 5th century BC and seem to be noted by Socrates – “If we hadn’t a voice or a tongue, and wanted to express things to one another, wouldn’t we try to make signs by moving our hands, head, and the rest of our body.” (1). The bible refers to its use in the Gospel of Luke.

 

Is Sign Language Universal

There is no universal sign language and different signs are used by different countries and regions. Just like languages evolve geographically, so does sign language. In America, they use the American Sign Language (ASL), which is the 4th most popular language in the US with over 2 million users (2), while in England, they use British Sign Language (BSL) with over 125,000 users. It has been noted that there are between 138-300 different types of sign languages used throughout the world and even English-speaking countries do not use the same sign language (3). An interesting fact, ASL alphabet can all be done on one hand, whereas the BSL alphabet utilizes 2 hands.

 

The Benefits of Learning Sign Language

There are many benefits of learning sign language:

  • Learning a language that is based on expressions, not speech, may help those that can use this form of communication to be able to understand babies and animals more
  • You may become better at spelling as you may need to spell items out with the alphabet if you do not know the sign
  • Improves presentation and body language skills
  • Increases opportunities in one’s personal and business world
  • Helps one concentrate more when communicating with someone
  • Learning a second language, including sign language, is known to improve overall learning comprehension.

The content management system (CMS) you use has a major impact on the technical part of translations. Some CMSs may already have an integrated section to translate content but often, you will need to use a translation connector tailored to your CMS to author and publish the localized content.

Cockney rhyming slang is a humorous twist on the English language and was first used in the 19th century in the East End of London. The language was widely used by market traders, costermongers, and street hawkers. It is still not confirmed as to whether rhyming slang was a linguistic accident, a game, or a cryptolect developed to confuse non-locals/outsiders.

The rhyming slang is still being used widely throughout England. Many phrases of rhyming slang include humor and are sarcastic and ironic. The cockney accent, however, is a unique tone of voice and tends to only be heard in the outskirts of London, rather than central London or the rest of the United Kingdom. However, cockney rhyming slang has been used in other parts of the world and cockneyrhymingslang.co.uk has commented that they receive many inquiries from places like the U.S., China, and Japan.

Cockney rhyming slang works by using an expression which rhymes with a word. In some cases, some individuals remove the rhyming word and use the non-rhyming word in a sentence. For example, the word “look” rhymes with “butcher’s hook“. In many cases the rhyming word is removed, so you will not find too many saying they are having a “butcher’s hook”, but they would rather say they are having a “butcher’s”.

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the US. In fact, the US’s 52 million Spanish speakers rank second in the world behind Mexico’s 129 million speakers. That’s more than Argentina (44 million), Spain (46 million) and even Colombia (50 million).

US Hispanic Population

Hispanics now represent over $1.5 trillion dollars in purchasing power and their population is predicted to grow by 163% by 2050. Nearly 77% of Hispanics in the US are 45 years old or younger, 32% are under 20. Hispanics are also the largest minority group in the US, representing 18.3% (2019) of the population. That number is expected to grow to 30% by 2050. So, while properly marketing to the US Hispanic population can be complex, it is no longer a nice to have. They are a diverse group of second-generation Spanish speakers living in the US and more than half are under 40.

According to Lisa Gevelberm at Google, Hispanics are the front runners in the adoption of new devices, “they are power users of mobile and over-index in video consumption”. Lisa went on to say that there are misconceptions that Hispanics are laggards in terms of tech adoption, and it is quite the opposite.

For organizations looking to increase their clientele, this group should be at the top of their target prospect list. Hispanics are actually the largest demographic online, ranking higher than anyone in web video consumption and overall internet use. While once a largely ignored demographic and still considered untapped by many advertising experts, there is no denying the importance of this group to the US economy and to brand marketers.

Traditionally, marketing to Spanish speakers was centered around “Hispanic-themed” holidays, like Cinco de Mayo or Quinceañeras, for example. While this tactic was certainly under representing the importance of Latinos in everyday American life, some of it was flat out wrong. While Cinco de Mayo is a commercial success in the US, it’s more of a Hallmark Holiday and few Mexicans even celebrate it as it wasn’t a major milestone. Contrary to popular belief (at least in the US), Mexico’s real Independence Day is the 16th of September.

Who Successfully Markets to the US Hispanic Population?

Companies that have the most success with the US Hispanic population consumers create rich and engaging Spanish-language digital content that is on par with their original English materials. They also invest in quality Spanish-language translations of accompanying marketing materials.

I can’t tell you how many times in my translation career I have seen a client balk at a $500 Spanish translation for ad-copy when they paid their creative agency $25,000+ to come up with the original English version. It defies reality and is frankly, short sighted.

Brands that view the Hispanic consumers as different, yet equal are the ones succeeding. In fact, only 2.45% of US-based ecommerce sites are available in more than one language and of that, only 17% are in English/Spanish. US Hispanic Population

Amazon has done a great job of localizing their website for the US Hispanic population, starting with the launch of their full Amazon.com site in Spanish back in 2017.  Several years back, McDonald’s won the Association of Hispanic Ad Agencies (AHAA) Marketer of the Year for their focus on the Hispanic community, which included Spanish-language advertising.

I know that many decisions are made as a family in the Latino culture, maybe more so than other ethnicities. When it comes to buying a new product, many of these discussions will start around the kitchen table, each generation giving their input. As a life-long translation professional with more than a few Spanish website localization engagements, I am keenly aware of the power of using language to bridge gaps. Brands that embrace these family values of inclusion and group decision making in their marketing strategies will gain a larger Hispanic audience.

Tips for Marketing to Hispanics

  1. Unify your web marketing strategies by showing Spanish-language customers they are just as important as everyone else in the U.S. market. Don’t just create Spanish-language micro-sites. Give Spanish speakers and their families the same immersive customer experience as everyone else.
  2. Be thoughtful when translating into Spanish. It is key to remember that in Spanish, there is a formal and informal address. The “tú” vs. “usted” decision will direct many elements of your communication plan. Know your audience and your brand voice; perhaps informal and fun or traditional and serious.
  3. Enhance your SEO for Spanish. If you are focusing on only the optimization of your English content for SEO, then your Spanish content will duly suffer as will your Spanish speakers when they try to find you using search.

In conclusion, the US Hispanic population continues to grow stronger each year and will eventually represent 30% of the total population by 2050. This group as a whole has been largely ignored by marketers for many years. However, there are some savvy brands out there that are now understanding Hispanic culture, family life and heritage. They are using this knowledge to effectively connect with this influential and ever-growing demographic.
